Remember the joys of making mud pies, of building sand castles? Put

on your old clothes and learn the art and science of making lightweight,

beautiful, natural looking pots and troughs for your plants, Zen bowls

and other garden objects. Topics include safe working environments;

properties of concrete, additives, and mixing techniques; building and

embellishing pots and troughs. You will complete two or more pots and

will receive instructions for the unmolding and curing process that takes place the following week after class.

Ever admire beautifully decorated flowerpots but ouch!  prices were sky high?  Then put on your old

clothes and learn techniques that employ free or very inexpensive materials to create imaginative,

stunning garden art. Topics include safe working environments, bases, mastics, embellishing materials,

design, application techniques, and grouting. Hypertufa pots made by the instructor will be provided for you to

decorate/embellish. You will take home one or two embellished pots and instructions for grouting or stay

for Mosaic Basics (below) and grout your pots in class.

Mosaic Embellishment: The Basics and Beyond

Mosaic is one of the earliest art forms and arguably, one of the most beautiful.

Over the years, artists have applied all kinds of materials including glass,

stone, mirrors, jewels, and broken dishes to a variety of bases to create garden

art, murals, shrines, tableaux and to embellish furniture, frames, lamps - you

name it!  Join the fun creating in this exciting art form. You will learn about

bases, mastics, design, application techniques, design, grouting and work

safety. Join us for one or both days of this workshop. For beginners a well as

those with experience. Bring stuff (see supply list below) that you want to use.

Some materials will be supplied or available for purchase from the instructor.

Workshop Fees include these supplies: cement, peat moss, vermiculite, bonders, adhesives, grout, some embellishments, etc

Supplies you will need to bring

Hypertufa Garden Pots

1 pair rubber/latex work gloves - Boss Flexigrip type are good for this

1 dust mask

1 pair safety glasses

2 or more fairly smooth boards about 16”x16” (junk lumber/plywood)

Optional:

shells, stones, found objects, marbles, old jewelry, old china, etc.

molds - large yogurt containers, bowls (no ridges), nesting mixing bowls, flower pots, small/medium sturdy cardboard boxes,

           old flat pizza tins, cookie sheets, etc. -  Use your imaginations for molds and embellishments.

1 pair of leather gloves

1 pair of wheeled nippers (check mosaic supply web sites for $17-$24 nippers)

figurines, old china to break, found objects, etc.

any object(s) you want to mosaic on such as a picture frame, old plate, mirror, wooden plaque, box, a small table or little bench, etc.

the instructor will have some items for you to select from also

any object(s) you want to mosaic with - glass tiles, old/broken china, found objects, old jewelry, glass, etc.

Susan Seyfarth began making Yard Art after retiring from being an English professor. She fell in love with the

art form and now spends her time making and selling yard art, teaching others how to create in this medium

while traveling and living in both Florida and Wisconsin.
